Central Air Conditioning systems have four basic components:
- an outside condensing unit
- an inside evaporator coil
- a set of tubing to circulate refrigerant between the outside and inside units
- an air delivery system to circulate the conditioned air
Condensed refrigerant is sent from the outside compressor unit to the evaporator coil, usually located in the indoor air supply duct or air handler unit (Represented by the grey line). As the warm air from the home flows through the evaporator coil, heat is absorbed by the refrigerant and moisture is removed from the air, leaving cooler, dryer air to re-circulate through the home.
The heated refrigerant (represented by the mauve line) is then cycled back to the outdoor condensing unit where it is compressed and cooled by discharging the heat into the outside air.
